IWM is a global authority on conflict and its impact on people’s lives, collecting objects and stories that give an insight into people’s experience of war, preserve them for future generations, and bring them to today’s audiences in the most powerful way possible.
Founded in 1917, the intention was to collect and display material as a record of everyone’s experiences during the First World War - civilian and military - and to commemorate the sacrifices of all sections of society. IWM was formally established by Act of Parliament in 1920 and a governing Board of Trustees appointed.
Over a century later, IWM’s remit has expanded to respond to conflict from the First World War to the present. The five museum sites all have unique collections and tell vivid personal stories of lives engulfed in war, enabling visitors to gain a deeper understanding of how conflict has shaped the world we live in today.

The food bank supports all residents in the City of London regardless of age, who as a result of ill-health, vulnerability, isolation or age, are unable to meet their daily food needs. The City of London is generally perceived as an affluent London borough. This is a misrepresentation and ignores that many households are living in poverty and are in critical need of support at this time. The food bank is working with a range of partners, including Here to Help London, to source food and to reach those greatest in need and is volunteer led.
